Methodology

The main object of our project “Silence Hides Violence” was to inform students that domestic violence can happen to anybody no matter if they are male or female. Even if they think that nobody would be able to help them there are organizations that will provide help to those that are in need. There are men, women, and children that need help in many ways that may seem impossible to solve but the organizations will do their best to make you move forward.
During the process of this project there were many obstacles that we encountered but we were able to overcome them. In the beginning of the project we called many organizations to know if we can get a guest speaker to talk about abusive relationships and how there is help that can be provided. We looked through the internet to see if we could find an organization that would work with us throughout the project because we knew that this was not going to be an easy task. Many calls were made to different organizations but none gave us a definite “yes” because they would hear our story about our capstone project. They said that they would call us back but no call was ever returned to us so we kept trying to look for other organizations that were interested in helping us. The search continued and we finally got a response from “La Rosa Family Services” which was a good sign because that meant that we could start working with them.
When the response was “yes”, we immediately started to make plans on what we were able to do that would be a good help to their organization and they said that donating clothes, plates, and toys would be helpful. We decided to donate clothes and toys because now that the students are grown, they have clothes and toys that are not used anymore. The announcement was made that there would be boxes placed with: Mr. Le, Ms. Adams, Ms. LG, and Ms. Devaney. Students immediately started to tell us that they would bring a lot because they had clothes that were not worn anymore and toys that were not used anymore. Diana and I were getting excited to know that the students would be involved with our project and now all we had to do is waiting.
As the days went by the boxes started to get full and we were delighted to know that the children would have clothes and toys. Everything was going good but still wanted to do one more thing which was to bring a guest speaker that would talk about going through an abusive relationship. I called “La Rosa Family Services” and told them that the donation process was going good but we wanted to make sure that the students knew how going through an abusive relationship can really be hard but it can be overcome. I was told that there was one person that would suit for what I was looking for, and that was Laura M. Salinas.
I was given Laura’s number so I can call her to know if she would be able to come to school and talk to the students during an assembly. I called her one day in the afternoon and I told her that I was looking for someone to come to school and talk to the students about domestic violence. She immediately said “yes” because she told me that she has gone through an abusive relationship while going through college, and still made it to the end. We made an agreement on a date and I was excited for that day to come because the students will hear from someone who has experienced going through an abusive relationship. The day finally came and she was excited to see many students in the auditorium getting ready to hear her speech. She gave her speech and many students were surprised to know that it is possible to get through and abusive relationship and school.
The weeks went by and the boxes kept getting full especially when Alexus brought ten trash bags full of toys and clothes to Mr. Le’s class. The box in Ms. Adams class was also getting full so I decided to call the organization and ask them if someone would be able to come, they said that someone would be sent to pick up the boxes. We waited for someone to come but there was no one that made the attempt to come so Diana and I decided to take the boxes to the organization. Diana was the one taking the clothes and toys but there was a problem because the organization had a new location and they had a hard time to find the new address. Diana drove around for about an hour but still the organization was not found so they were not able to deliver the boxes. The boxes were taken to another donation center because the organization was not found but at least the clothes and toys were given to someone that is really in need.
In the end we were able to gather many clothes and toys for men, women, and children which was our main objective to do for "La Rosa Family Services". We will try again to look for the new location of “La Rosa Family Services” and show them that we were really serious on helping them because we want to be known as being a good help to the people in need.
