The main object of our project “Silence Hides Violence” was to inform students that domestic violence can happen to anybody no matter if they are male or female. Even if they think that nobody would be able to help them there are organizations that will provide help to those that are in need. There are men, women, and children that need help in many ways that may seem impossible to solve but the organizations will do their best to make you move forward.
During the process of this project there were many obstacles that we encountered but we were able to overcome them. In the beginning of the project we called many organizations to know if we can get a guest speaker to talk about abusive relationships and how there is help that can be provided. We looked through the internet to see if we could find an organization that would work with us throughout the project because we knew that this was not going to be an easy task. Many calls were made to different organizations but none gave us a definite “yes” because they would hear our story about our capstone project. They said that they would call us back but no call was ever returned to us so we kept trying to look for other organizations that were interested in helping us. The search continued and we finally got a response from “La Rosa Family Services” which was a good sign because that meant that we could start working with them.
When the response was “yes”, we immediately started to make plans on what we were able to do that would be a good help to their organization and they said that donating clothes, plates, and toys would be helpful. We decided to donate clothes and toys because now that the students are grown, they have clothes and toys that are not used anymore. The announcement was made that there would be boxes placed with: Mr. Le, Ms. Adams, Ms. LG, and Ms. Devaney. Students immediately started to tell us that they would bring a lot because they had clothes that were not worn anymore and toys that were not used anymore. Diana and I were getting excited to know that the students would be involved with our project and now all we had to do is waiting.
As the days went by the boxes started to get full and we were delighted to know that the children would have clothes and toys. Everything was going good but still wanted to do one more thing which was to bring a guest speaker that would talk about going through an abusive relationship. I called “La Rosa Family Services” and told them that the donation process was going good but we wanted to make sure that the students knew how going through an abusive relationship can really be hard but it can be overcome. I was told that there was one person that would suit for what I was looking for, and that was Laura M. Salinas.
I was given Laura’s number so I can call her to know if she would be able to come to school and talk to the students during an assembly. I called her one day in the afternoon and I told her that I was looking for someone to come to school and talk to the students about domestic violence. She immediately said “yes” because she told me that she has gone through an abusive relationship while going through college, and still made it to the end. The day finally came and she was excited to see many students in the auditorium getting ready to hear her speech. She gave her speech and many students were surprised to know that it is possible to get through and abusive relationship and school.
The weeks went by and the boxes kept getting full especially when Alexus brought ten trash bags full of toys and clothes to Mr. Le’s class. The box in Ms. Adams class was also getting full so I decided to call the organization and ask them if someone would be able to come, they said that someone would be sent to pick up the boxes. We waited for someone to come but there was no one that made the attempt to come so Diana and I decided to take the boxes to the organization. Diana was the one taking the clothes and toys but there was a problem because the organization had a new location and they had a hard time to find the new address. Diana drove around for about an hour but still the organization was not found so they were not able to deliver the boxes. The boxes were taken to another donation center because the organization was not found but at least the clothes and toys were given to someone that is really in need.
In the end we were able to gather many clothes and toys for men, women, and children.  We will try again to look for the new location of “La Rosa Family Services” and show them that we were really serious on helping them because we want to be known as being a good help to the people in need.
In the end we have achieved our goal which was to donate clothes and toys to men, women, and children that are in need. With this done we hope to encourage students and teachers to realize that domestic violence is capable to happen to anyone and that help is available no matter the problem. We hope that this project has helped students realize that any type of help is accepted at any organization because the victims will be grateful that there is someone that cares for them.

weekly reflection (3-24-11)

Name: Daisy Enriquez_______________________________________________
Date:  3/24/11_________________________
Project:  Silence Hides Violence _____________________________________________________________________________
What is the goal of the project?  How has it changed over the course of Capstone?
The goal of the project is to raise awareness of domestic violence because there are starting to be more cases of domestic violence involving teenagers. This is happening during high school and most students don’t even know the many ways that domestic violence can happen and if it will happen to them. The project did not change over the course because we informed the students and teachers that domestic violence can happen to anyone and there are organizations that will help them no matter the situation.

Your Capstone Project is a tool for you to demonstrate your college readiness and global competency. Use the GPS Global Leadership Performance Outcomes to evaluate your college readiness and global competency.
Investigate the World: Produce New Global Knowledge.  Students investigate the world, including their immediate environment.
How have you incorporated this element of the GPS into your Capstone project?
This project is connected globally because all over the world there are men, woman, and children that get abused and need help to recover from their wounds. The people that are going through the abuse may not have help and this can be very dangerous because it can lead to major injuries or even death.

Where are your strengths in this area?  Why are they strengths?  Where is this demonstrated in your Capstone?
My strengths on this project were being able to spread out the topic throughout the school by getting a guest speaker to come and talk about her personal issues. She really explained how going through domestic violence is very hard to go through while going to school but possible to keep going with your life.

Where are your weaknesses in this area?  Why do you consider these to be weaknesses?  How do you plan on correcting these weaknesses?
My weaknesses in this are were not getting things in time because at times there were some things that could not be done right away. These were my weaknesses because it would push us back from our original timeline and that meant that we had to change a lot. I plan to correct these weaknesses by getting things on time and making sure that everything goes according the timeline.

Recognize and Weigh Perspectives: Apply Cross-Cultural Understanding.  Students recognize their own and others’ perspectives.
How have you incorporated this element of the GPS into your Capstone project?
This element was used in my project because students now know about domestic violence and know what to do in case their peers need help and the knowing the signs are a key factor to know because those can be warning signs.

Where are your strengths in this area?  Why are they strengths?  Where is this demonstrated in your Capstone?
My strengths were informing the students on getting any type of help from the many organizations that there are to help in any kind of way.
Where are your weaknesses in this area?  Why do you consider these to be weaknesses?  How do you plan on correcting these weaknesses?
My weaknesses were not getting perspectives from other schools or groups on what they thought about the project. If we would have gotten perspectives from other schools then we would have had more opinions of other students.

Communicate Ideas: Connect & Collaborate Across Boundaries.  Students communicate and collaborate effectively with diverse audiences.
How have you incorporated this element of the GPS into your Capstone project?
This element was used in my project because there was many communications with the students because they would ask me questions on what to do if they saw someone in an abusive relationship and if they should give advice to that person.

Where are your strengths in this area?  Why are they strengths?  Where is this demonstrated in your Capstone?
My strengths on this project were being able to communicate with the students because many of them had a big impact when they heard that many abusive relationships are happening during high school or even before. The survey that was passed around had a lot of answers that shocked me and my partner and while they were taking it, many of them were asking me questions about how do they know if they are being abused.

Where are your weaknesses in this area?  Why do you consider these to be weaknesses?  How do you plan on correcting these weaknesses?
My weaknesses were not showing any type of film because if I would have showed the film then the students could see more cases of women moving forward with their lives even though they suffered through abuse. A film could have showed how not only women get abused but men and children can go through abuse without anybody helping them because they have no one that takes care of them.

Take Action: Enact Global Solutions.  Students translate their ideas and findings into appropriate actions to improve conditions.
How have you incorporated this element of the GPS into your Capstone project?
This element was used in the project because the consequences were said if somebody was to ever get abused and what to do if they suffer.

Where are your strengths in this area?  Why are they strengths?  Where is this demonstrated in your Capstone?
My strengths were being able to tell the students about the consequences of going through domestic violence by having the guest speaker.

Where are your weaknesses in this area?  Why do you consider these to be weaknesses?  How do you plan on correcting these weaknesses?
My weakness was not creating events about domestic violence because I didn’t know what to do as something that everybody can do together. I did not get an idea on what to do so I could have raised money for the organization.
I would score my self a 7 because I still have not heard from the organization whether they are coming to get the toys and clothes but I am still getting more toys so that is still good news.
